The cast of Impulse included Massie Hasson, Enuka Okuma, Craig Arnold, Tanner Stine, and Missi Pyle., the 2008 film directed by Liman, Impulse centered around Henrietta Coles (Hasson), a teenager who discovers she has the ability to teleport but no control over her destination. The first time Henrietta taps into her powers, she’s in a truck with Clay Boone (Stine) as he tries to rape her. Impulse goes on to chronicle the fallout from that inciting incident, while the 16 year-old Henrietta coming to terms with her unpredictable strengths. Impulse received a generally positive assessment, with noting that the thriller became more action-packed. Related:The finale of Impulse season 2 featured something of a cliffhanger, as Henrietta learns the unsettling truth about her father which leaves her reeling. Although fans of the thriller were eager to witness the followup, it was announced that YouTube had cancelled Impulse after two seasons., who also served as showrunner, shared the news in a heartfelt social media post.
She noted that, rather than simply being a science-fiction drama, Impulse at its core focused on a young woman grappling with her sexual assault. Check out LeFranc’s note below.
Impulse is the latest example of YouTube’s new strategy regarding original programming. The video platform is shifting its energies into more unscripted and documentary content, such as a recently-debuted exploration of Justin Bieber’s career, and pulling back on scripted shows. Four other shows, including Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television, Sideswiped and Do You Want to See a Dead Body, were cancelled in April 2019. Moved to Showtime, where it received a second season renewal.and Liza On Demand remain in the scripted category, entering their third seasons. While the fact that Henrietta’s story ended on an uncompleted note is frustrating to loyal viewers, LeFranc is correct that it shows the perils of competing in a crowded television environment. There are plenty of entertainment, subscription-based platforms. It would appear that among the likes of Netflix and Disney+, YouTube Premium has yet to figure out its identity.
For now, rather than thrillers like Impulse, the service will pivot to more docuseries.
