The Tetris game was created by Alexey Pajitnov in 1984—the product of Alexey’s computer programming experience and his love of puzzles. In the decades to follow, Tetris became one of the most successful and recognizable video games, appearing on nearly every gaming platform available. OBJECTIVE

The goal of Tetris is to score as many points as possible by clearing horizontal lines of Blocks. The player must rotate, move, and drop the falling Tetriminos inside the Matrix (playing field). Lines are cleared when they are filled with Blocks and have no empty spaces.
As lines are cleared, the level increases and Tetriminos fall faster, making the game progressively more challenging. If the Blocks land above the top of the playing field, the game is over.

On June 6, 1984, at the Soviet Academy of Sciences in Moscow, an A.I. Researcher created a simple puzzle video game in his spare time.

His name was Alexey Pajitnov, and he called his game Tetris. The gaming world changed forever after that, as Tetris became the highest-selling game ever at the time when it came packaged with Nintendo’s Game Boy.But for Pajitnov, not much changed at first. Since he created the game at his work, and because he lived in the Soviet Union, the Russian government claimed ownership of the intellectual property. From then on, the rights to Tetris would be in flux for years. Nintendo and Atari got into a legal battle over the rights in 1989. In 1996, the rights lapsed from the new Russian government, and went back to Pajitnov. Until that point, he had made no money from his creation.Pajitnov soon after founded The Tetris Company, and publishing rights bounced around between Hasbro, THQ, EA, Ubisoft, and Sega.

As a result, there have been a heck of a lot of Tetris games over the years. Some stuck with the time-tested formula of forming lines, while others experimented with new ideas. Some of these games were good, others awful. Luckily no one’s been crazy enough to make a Tetris-themed first person shooter or walking simulator yet. Still, all the crazy (and crazy good) creations with the Tetris name deserve a look. We’re looking at the ten best and ten worst Tetris games.

Via YouTube.comTetris Party Deluxe is an enhanced version of Tetris Party, a downloadable WiiWare game from 2008. As the name implies, this is a multiplayer-focused Tetris game with various game modes for competitive play.Deluxe added six new game modes, such as Bombliss, in which bombs are thrown at you; Sprint, where you have to clear 40 lines as fast as possible; and Co-Op vs. Co-Op, where you and a buddy go against two other people. A 72 isn’t a bad score, but critics knocked it for the increased price since it didn’t add enough to justify the extra dollars.

Via YouTube.comReleased in 2011, Tetris Axis boasted a wide variety of different game modes. The “featured” mode is Fever, in which the player must clear as many lines as possible in only one minute. But there are other modes such as Computer Battle, where you have to clear lines to fill up the A.I. Opponent’s board, Jigsaw, where the pieces represent a picture and must be placed in a sort order, and Fit, where the player must fit pieces through a hole in a wall.Reviews praised how inventive Tetris Axis was, especially with its AR support using the Nintendo DS camera. However, a lot of these modes were repackaged from Tetris Party and Tetris DS. Via Tetris.comTetris Blitz was released in 2013 for mobile devices, and published by EA.

The game relied more on quick rounds, with the goal of clearing as many lines as possible before time runs out. The idea is that playing quickly like this would make Tetris more playable on the go, rather than having to sit through one long game of trying to clear the whole board. To help this, EA added a mechanic where tiles automatically lined themselves up, with the player just needing to choose where in the row to place them. However, that whole 'published by EA' detail is what crippled the game. Tetris Blitz was widely criticized for its ridiculous amounts of advertising and microtransactions. Pop-ups plagued most games, advertising things like a GoDaddy subscription, or a Netflix sign-up.

17 Best: Tetris Party Deluxe (DS Version) (76). Via YouTube.comWhile the Wii version of Tetris Party Deluxe got a lower score of 72, the DS version performed slightly better at 76. There are two reasons for this, both pretty simple. The first is that the original Tetris Party wasn’t available on the DS, thus this was an all-new experience for that audience.

The DS was also better suited for multiplayer than the Wii’s cumbersome friend code number system. The second is that a lot of people simply prefer Tetris on the go. We’ll see throughout this list that most of the top-scoring Tetris games are mobile versions. Via OneLargePrawn.co.zaTetris Ultimate received resoundingly low scores no matter what system it was on, but its first appearance on this list comes via the 3DS version.

The biggest complaint against this version is that it’s a paltry version of Tetris DS, offering just four game modes. This version was also geared almost exclusively towards multiplayer, with many of the game modes offering a severe challenge. One mode, Invisible, makes your pieces invisible once you place them. Another, Escalation, makes the game harder and harder as it goes on. Master is basically a super-hard difficulty setting. This isn’t the game for casual Tetris players.

15 Best: Tetris For iPad (76). Via YouTube.comTetris for the iPad is exactly what it says on the tin: Tetris on the iPad (and iPhone, which we’ll get to). There’s nothing too special about this version other than an endless marathon mode, touch controls, and prettier graphics. What made this version of Tetris stand out at first is that, at the time, this was the only way to play Tetris on an iPhone or iPad. As review site Modojo put it: “this is without a doubt the best version of Tetris for the iPad, largely because it's the only version of Tetris for the iPad.”.

Via YouTube.comYou know a game is old when it hyphenates ‘online,’ and indeed this is one of the earlier attempts at an online version of Pajitnov’s baby. Originally released as The Next Tetris on PlayStation and PC, this game introduced “Cascade” mode. In Cascade mode, there’s what’s called Multiminos pieces, which are made up of different colors.

If the colors don’t match whatever they landed on, it’ll break apart, and pieces can fall below a space if there’s room, allowing you to form lines after you’ve put a piece down.On-line Edition was a special version of the game available on Sega’s short-lived online service SegaNet, for the Dreamcast. 13 Best: Tetris (PS3 Version) (80).

Via BrutalGamer.comReceiving an 80 on Metacritic, Tetris for the PlayStation 3 takes a pretty high spot. There’s not much to say about this port of the game. It’s the original game we all know and love, with a shiny new coat of paint and online multiplayer. That’s about all there is to it.Why was it rated so highly, in that case? Because ultimately, Tetris is still a great game. Still, critics questioned the $9.99 price tag considering the game is so old, and the PS3 version marked the 15th platform it has appeared on. Via YouTube.comLike Tetris Ultimate, Tetris Worlds is not a particularly beloved game, but the pitiful 65 the Game Boy Advance version received is the best score this game ever got.

Before saying anything about the game itself, know that it cost $40 and didn't have a save feature.Tetris Worlds on the GBA was also criticized for being generally lackluster. Mediocre controls, okay sound effects and graphics, decent game modes.

But a 21 out of 100 score by GameSpot mentions one terrible feature: you can keep spinning and moving a piece once it lands in perpetuity, delaying the next piece coming until you stop, thus making this version of Tetris laughably easy. 11 Best: Tetris 99 (83).

Via NintendoLife.comThe latest edition of the beloved puzzle game, Tetris 99 released in early 2019 for the Switch, and boy-howdy if it’s not a product of its time. Tetris 99 is an online, battle royale version of Tetris. Yes, that’s right, Tetris is now ripping of Fortnite, because that’s the world we live in.Yet despite the ridiculous premise, Tetris 99 got some great review scores. Being a Switch exclusive helps, because it’s against the law to dislike a Switch game, but battling 98 other players at once to score the highest and spring traps on your opponents is really fun, as it turns out. Via CultofMac.comThe same version of Tetris for the iPad, Tetris for the iPhone got an even worse score.

Critics panned this version (released in 2011, not to be confused with a 2006 version,) for more or less the same reasons as the iPad version. This edition of the game introduces One-Touch Mode, which is similar to Tetris Blitz in that the game more or less has the pieces aligned properly already, you just have to touch on the board where you want them to go. However, this is an EA game, and its heavy reliance on microtransactions and constant ads didn’t win them any fans.

9 Best: Puyo Puyo Tetris (83). Via Destructoid.comOne of the highest-rated Tetris games on Metacritic isn’t just a Tetris game, but a hybrid mashup. Puyo Puyo is another puzzle game, where you have to match multi-colored blobs together to clear them from the board. While never all that popular outside of Japan, its bizarre combination with Tetris made it stand out.One player plays Tetris while the other plays Puyo Puyo. That’s about it, really. There are a bunch of different game modes similar to ones already mentioned on this list, mostly geared towards competitive multiplayer.

It’s an odd and somewhat lazy melding of franchises, but it works. Via Polygon.comThe lowest-rated version of Tetris Ultimate is the Xbox One version, coming in at just a 59 on Metacritic.

The Xbox One version was criticized for the same reasons as its 3DS port, but again, it seems this slightly lazy rehash of a timeless game is less forgiving on a non-portable console.Reviewers criticized the lack of game modes, stating that this was more or less Tetris as it always was without enough new additions or changes. Worst of all, some reviewers even complained of frame rate drops. Ultimately, this is just Tetris on the Xbox One, and frankly, what’s the point of that? 7 Best: Tetris DS (84). Via YouTube.comDeveloped and published by Nintendo, Tetris DS is regarded as one of the best iterations of Tetris ever.

They did a lot to make the basic game feel more alive and unique, with a standard mode featuring Mario running through various Super Mario game levels on the top screen, progressing or failing as you do.There are also five other modes that are still unique today. There’s Push Mode, which features Donkey Kong and allows you to move pieces up, and Catch Mode, featuring Metroid characters, in which the player must catch falling pieces while avoiding enemies. Via YouTube.comReleased on the Xbox Live Arcade in 2007, Tetris Splash was the first game created by Tetris Online Inc., a studio founded by The Tetris Company to release games online. The name Splash comes from the game having an arbitrary water theme, with aquarium backgrounds and “water-themed” music.

The thing is, you have to pay to unlock various other aquarium backgrounds, and the fish to fill them up. The game itself was terrible, featuring a rapid pace that was too fast, and mandatory “ghost blocks” littering the boards. In a 3 out of 10 review Eurogamer simply said: “ Tetris Splash should be consigned to a watery grave.” 5 Best: Tetris Minis (85). Via YouTube.comPlayStation Minis were cheap, short, download-only games for the PSP, running from 2009 to 2012. They were mostly phone or online flash games ported to the PSP. One such game was Tetris Minis, released in 2009.Tetris Minis is jam-packed with game modes, a dozen in all, as well as the standard fare we all know and love. Critics praised the number of modes, most of which were fun to play and not just tacked on for the sake of marketing. Also praised were the music and the clean but beautiful graphics.

Via GameReactor.euIf this is the evolution of Tetris, it’s not going to last very long. Released on the Xbox 360 in 2007, critics did not enjoy their time with Tetris Evolution. Rather than just sticking Tetris on a disc and calling it a day, this time around, developer Mass Media Games decided to mix it up.The problem is, they mixed too much. Critics eviscerated the game for changing the formula too much, offering wild game modes that either changed too much or were boring. Evolution also had poor music, backgrounds, and controls. 3 Best: Tetris Party (86). Via YouTube.comCasual party games and the Wii go together like well, casual party games and the Wii.

That’s probably why Tetris Party for the Wii is the second-highest rated Tetris game on Metacritic. The basic form of the Deluxe release a few years later, Tetris Party kept it simple with a handful of game modes. But more like Tetris DS, Party made sure they were unique and left an impact.

There’s a mode reminiscent of Mr. Driller, a turn-based mode, one using the Wii’s Balance Board, and a competitive mode featuring up to six players. There were also built-in achievements, and Mii integration. Via YouTube.comIt doesn’t get any worse than this. Tetris Worlds, released in 2002 on the PlayStation 2 by THQ was abhorrent. Tetris Worlds introduced “worlds” to the formula, which were basically a series of ugly backgrounds.

There’s also a story of sorts, but it’s so boring it just gets in the way.The real meat of the game, the Tetris part, didn’t work. Featuring the same infinitely spinning piece mechanic as the GBA version, this made the game ludicrously easy. The PS2 version in particular was mocked for sluggish controls and ugly visuals. 1 Best: Tetris Effect (89). Via RoadtoVR.comWho would have thought a VR Tetris game would top this list?

Well, here we are, with Sony’s PlayStation VR exclusive Tetris Effect grabbing an 89 on Metacritic. What sets this version of Tetris apart from all the others is the impressive theatrical display. Tetris Effect puts you in a bright, colorful world, as if you were viewing a kaleidoscope while you were floating through space. Something is always happening all around you, making the game feel far more exciting than it has any right too. And don’t get us started on the incredible soundtrack.
